Music and sport at festival

Ryland Fisher

Lovers of sport and music will not have to choose between attending the Cape Town Festival this weekend or watching the big sport on television.
Multichoice has agreed to provide the festival with two big screens on which we will screen Super 14 rugby, IPL cricket, and English Premier League soccer, including Sunday’s big match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The big screens will be positioned in our hospitality area and our public bar and will show sport throughout the festival weekend.

Cape Town Festival 2010, our 11th festival, kicked off officially on Wednesday night at the TH Barry lecture room at Iziko Museum with the screening of Rainbow Nation 2010, followed by our One City, Many Cultures Debate with the theme, Cape Town Beyond 2010.

The screening of Rainbow Nation 2010 also marked the beginning of the One City, Many Cultures Film Festival, which runs in the same venue until Monday 22 March. The film festival features films about Cape Town, but also about human rights and tolerance.

The Cape Town Festival, part of the One City, Many Cultures project, is aimed at bringing together Cape Town’s diverse groups of people. We focus on what we have in common rather than what divides us.

On Friday, 19 March, from 5pm until 10pm, we have a musical programme in the Company’s Gardens which will feature some of the most popular bands in Cape Town. They include Hilton Schilder, Good Luck, South Paw, Kings of Vegas and the Hip Hop Collective, which will feature some of the best hip hop groups in Cape Town. The groups include Ill Skillz, ETC Crew, Jaak, 5th Floor and Rattex. A late addition to our programme for Friday night is Celeste Williams and 4Front, the band who normally backs Allistair Izobel.

On Saturday our musical programme continues from 1pm until 10pm with acts such as Afrikaans reggae band The Country Conquerers, French beat box group and 2009 World Beat Box champions Under Kontrol, Cape Town favourites Keeno Lee and Claire Phillips, Canadian-based Zaki Ibrahim, the ever popular Loading Zone featuring Allou April, and Napalma, which features Brazilian and African musicians.

Our programme continues on Sunday from 1pm until 10pm with headline appearances by Angolan R&B sensation Anselmo Ralph, supported by popular Cape Town acts, Emo Adams, The Rudimentals and The Gugulethu Tenors.

We will also have a special performance by a disabled group and showcase some of the best performers from our community festivals.

Because Sunday is Human Rights Day, we will have a special blessing of the festival by religious leaders and a cultural programme representing different religions.
Throughout all the entertainment, there will be food and drinks for sale, as well as a kiddie zone and a special area where some government departments will share with the public what they have been doing in service delivery.

All events linked to the Cape Town Festival, except the film festival, are once again free. (Ryland Fisher is Executive Chairperson of the Cape Town Festival. For more information, contact 021-4659042 or visit www.capetownfestival.co.za.)
